Boutique Hotels are smaller and more intimate. Luxury Hotels are larger and have a Swimming Pool, Spa etc.

You are trying to overly simplify a complex question. Hotels like the Hay Adams in Washington, DC, or the Oriental in Bangkok, Thailand, are top of the line luxury facilities offering a wide variety of services and amenities in an unparalled setting.

Boutique hotels are usually intimate, luxurious and sometimes “quirky”. They provide very personalized services and facilities; are almost never part of a chain. and are almost always less than 100 rooms.

That being said, a hotel can be both. I’ve stayed at the Sofitel Plaza in Hanoi, Vietnam. One of the plusest, most luxurious, and at the same time personalized hotels I’ve ever been in. It’s part of a chain and has 297 rooms. It’s the kind of place you don’t want to leave!

So, there’s really no single rule.
