do you have to be attractive to make it in vegas?

Marissa L asked:

just curious because i have a friend who just quit a really good job, moved down there spur of the moment (literally decided in a week), and she’s only lived there a week or 2 and she’s already gotten like 5 jobs and doesn’t know which one she should take or keep, and her myspace photos are now filled with pages full of her at VIP tables with all these new “friends”. i talked to her the other day and she told me that she never pays a CENT for anything whether it be getting in, drinks, or vip service/tables. keep in mind, she moved down there knowing NO ONE at all.

i thought about moving to vegas a couple months ago and i got lots of answers saying not to do it that the job market in vegas was horrrrrrrible and that i probably wouldn’t be able to find a job. but my friend is making it sound like life is a breeze down there - getting that many jobs offers in a week and having the luxury of deciding.. sign me up because this economy sucks where i currently live. sure the jobs she’s interviewing for are all in hotels, fancy restaurants, or fancy clubs but i assume that with tips she’ll be making far more than i am and i have a college degree!

the thing is, i will admit, that she is your stereotypical looking vegas party girl - what most people would stereotypically consider “attractive” or “hot”. so is life so easy for her down there because of her looks? is it that easy for the average looking individual, lol?

In Vegas, looks are everything and having “friends” helps a lot too in your career. She obviously knew someone who helped open a door for her into a good job. Good for her. Also, sometimes it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Viva Las Vegas!

i dont think i believe that she doesnt pay a cent for anything, especially VIP tables, getting in and drinks—what kind of job did she get that would get her all those things anyway??? someone who works in hotels and restaurants is a nobody in vegas so why would they give her free VIP tables and all that crap?? btw, i just came back from vegas over MLK weekend and yes the job market there is getting bad, unless you want to wear a skimmpy outfit and dance on tables..

The economy is awful and jobs are few. Did she get an average job or something in the illegal industry? Party girls may get someone to buy them drinks and food, but that is not a job.

Getting a job is not based on looks rather experience and education, except those in the “dancing” bars.

Vegas is a shallow town. Looks can get you a lot of things here but especially into the seedier side of life. Sounds like she is getting job offers in the “looks is everything” industry. Could be legal or not legal. Sounds fishy if you ask me.

Yeah it really just depends on the job.

In a town where money is everything, looks for women can really help out.

But this is only in certain part of the service industry. In most jobs its techinally illegal to hire based on looks. Many resorts and clubs get away with it for a variety of reasons though.

Not that I know of, you can still make it to vegas just fine. But 5 jobs is a lot to manage if you know someone who can manage that, its a lot of work lol. But it depends on the person if he or she has that will.
