I stayed at the Mirage and love it, although the only advantage was that the pool is absolutely awesome. If you are going to go a bit pricey, that's a good place to stay, or Treasure Island, which is next door. Plus, alot of the good spots are nearby... the Bellagio, the Venetian, Ceasar's Palace, etc. If you want to budget and don't really care about the room, you can stay for really really cheap at the Boardwalk, which is right on the strip.

When I go to Vegas, I really like to stay in a room that has a fabulous marble bathroom with separat shower and tub - that's fabulous as compared to my tiny bathroom at home. For this short time period, I can luxuriate and pretend that I have a beautiful master bedroom suite before going home to my small bedroom without ensuite bath. I don't gamble, so enjoy the luxuries when I can, like the restaurantes, shows, shopping, sites, and nice rooms.

If that's not your thing, I would save my money and stay somewhere cheaper so I could gamble.

I'll tell you the advantages first even though you didn't ask. We stayed in the Bellagio last August. The advantages of a luxury hotel are that you can join their "Players club" and earn points. Bellagio's players club card worked at a few places, including MGM, etc. With the points we earned, they ended up "Comping" ALL the extras, for the whole week.(Dining, Drinks, etc.) and we even got cash back.

The disadvantages include:
1. longer lines and longer walking distances to you room and everything else inside.

2. The stores and restaurants are more expensive. (but, like I said, they took it off our bill)

3. more crowds.

That's pretty much it.

When it comes right down to it, the only difference between a luxury and economy hotel is overall price. You can still gain access to the casino's/dining establishments/clubs in the expensive hotels without paying the price tag for a nicer room.

Vegas is all about partying, chances are you won't even spend a lot of time in your room anyhow. I would suggest the New Frontier or perhaps the Flamingo if you want fairly nice Casino hotels at reasonable rates. Treasure Island or the Luxor are fun if you want to pay slightly more. Circus Circus is one of the best "bang for the buck" hotel casinos in Vegas, but it is a bit removed from the main strip action.
