Any advice on hotel in NJ with views of NYC? And, just to stir the pot, something affordable?

OR, even something in NYC, doesn’t need to be luxury, just safe and within decent walking distance to mass transportation? We don’t have a lot of intentions to hang out in a hotel the entire time- but to be out exploring.
