What Should I Wear If the Dress Code Is “Smart Casual”?
My family has been invited to this dinner event at a luxury hotel (it frequently accommodates celebrities). I checked the restaurant out (http://www.fourseasons.com/toronto/dinin… and the dress code says “Smart Casual”.
The problem is, I don’t know what to wear. My husband and two kids, boy (age 10) and girl (age 14) have been invited. My husband usually wears only jeans and a simple t-shirt to work, and I usually wear chic and trendy clothes, they’re not business or casual like. My kids, well, they just wear normal casual clothes that you see all the other kids wearing–jeans, t-shirt, capris. We don’t really know what “smart casual” is and would really like some help.
If you have been to these events before, could you please tell us the dress code? I don’t want to wear my normal casual clothes and be prejudiced by the staff (my friend was!). It would be really wonderful if you could give us some pointers or ideas that comply with the dress code. Thanx.
P.S. Does anyone have ideas what my kids and husband should wear too?

Hi…Im an employee of a company that helps put on these events…and I would suggest Black! Black is classic and elegant….For example: Black slacks…paired with a blouse…either white or black would be cool…dont over accessorize(sp?) depending on the weather..long sleeves are probably going to give you a more smart casual look than short sleeves(as fara s the boys are concerned) for your husband I recommend some black or tan Dockers type pants with matching shirt(not t shirt exactly….but more of a pullover type top. Definetely ban the jeans on this night unless they are black or white…do you kind of see where I am going with this? Picture Calvin Klein type clothes…elegant yet very basic.

Your two kids and husband should wear dress pants and a collar shirt. I think those are smart and casual. You should wear a skirt and a nice cute shirt. If it is a little bit ’showy’ then wear a cute jacket over it. HAVE FUN!

You can call the restaurant and ask if guys are expected to wear ties, other than that: I’d have you, hubby and kids all dress like successful celebs, mindful of photogs….and carry demeanor that you all could care less what the staff may see you all to be.
The hubby may have to forego the jeans for one night, but I think he can find some savvy slacks and matching jacket that can do the trick; the same for the kids (without jackets). I’m sure you have a dress in there that can make you sizzingly “lethal” and turn heads in admiration.
And again: to h e l l with what the staff see you as.
Bear in mind, the staff live hand to mouth in barely affordable apartments, and easily become jealous of their successful restaurant clientele.
