I’ve stayed in some very nice Marriott’s. Some aren’t so hot - mostly because they need to be updated. I’m not sure I’d call it a five star.. but some are four stars. Ask how old it is or when it was last refurbished? I think that makes a big difference.

I’ve stayed in many of their locations and am a rewards member. If you plan on staying in one of their locations, I would definately suggest joining. It can earn you free and discounted night stay, airline miles, car rentals, etc.
Mariott owns and operates many chains. Some luxury , some not but all are decent. Here is a list of all of their holdings.

Marriott Hotels & Resorts (4 star plus)

Smartcoolmocha is correct.
I work in a Marriott and our JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton are all 5-star but the “normal” Marriotts are usually 4-star. There are 5-star ones but they are mostly in the major cities such as London, Paris, Chicago, Sydney etc
