Petite Auberge in SF is nice - I just copied this info from their web site - went there on my honeymoon before heading off to Europe.

JW Marriott at 500 Post Street. 2 min walk to Union Square. It used to be called The Pan Pacific, but it’s not small.

For smallish modern hotels, check out The Orchard Hotel or The Clift. Both “boutiquey” hotels in good location

The Ritz is a wonderful establishment, but it’s also a large hotel and the style is more “classic” than “modern”. For something more intimate, I suggest the Campton Place:

I’m not sure if this is the type hotel you are looking for, but it is very nice. There are a few nice places on Stockton street.
