I want to vacation to dominican republic in december. HELP?

I have heard from people vacationing from the US to the Dominican Republic for under $1000 for everything, but I can’t find anything under $1500 per person. I am looking to go in decemeber with 1 other person. I am not looking to stay in luxury hotel where I don’t need to leave the hotel. I am looking for something more towards being in an alright hotel in or close to a city, where they have their clubs/ bars and local entertainment. I am in New Jersey. Can anyone find or help me find some good deals from New Jersey/ Philly to Dominican Republic? Thanks!
